An Introduction to Sworddrill.io

The information in this post is outdated. This site has receieved a massive update since this post was written. If you want to be properly introduced to Sworddrill.io, then check out the guide.

This website was built for Bible Quizzers by a Bible Quizzer (see the about page). As of this writing, we have three tools: Flaschards, Search, and Memory Mastery. This site is still new, so there are probably several bugs and errors, so if you have found an erorr, or if you have a suggestion, visit the contact page and send us an email.

Flashcards

The flashcards game is very similar to physical flashcards, but you can choose the prompt and the answer for the cards, making it easier to customize your learning experience. I would suggest setting the prompt to the reference of the verse and the answer to the unique beginning, because the flashcards are strict by default, so you would have to type out the entire verse correctly if you chose to answer with the text of the verse (edit: flashcards now has a setting to ignore typos). In the future, I hope to add new settings to allow for different types of answer.

Search

The search tool is the only tool that would be useful for coaches right now. It has three different algorithms, in addition to highlighting. The first is the "simple" algorithm, which simply searches for the text that you typed in every single verse and sorts them according to the number of matches found in the verse and its reference.

The next is vector search, which splits the text up into words and searches using each word, so its search results are much more general and can help you to find similar phrases easily.

The last is regex, which stands for "Regular Expression". This algorithm uses JavaScript regular expressions under the surface, which can be quite powerful and can make your searches more detailed. It is very difficult to fully explain Regular Expressions, so have a look at the guide, which gives several examples of this algorithm in use.

You likely will not need to use all of these algorithms, but the guide should explain this quite well. The tool will also show you in what verses a unique word is found if you hover over it or click if you are on a mobile device (it does not do this for one-time words). Finally, the search tool can be a bit slow, specifically if you have slow internet or just a slow device in general. For this reason there is an optimize setting, which will disable highlighting.

BQ Matching

"BQ Matching" has been renamed to Memory Mastery, due to naming conflicts with a similarly named game on BQSuite

This game is very similar to the classic "Memory" game, in which the goal is to match every pair of cards. The cards start face down, and you reveal them one at a time, trying to guess where the other matching card is on the board, but there can only be two cards face up at a time. In our version you can choose what goes on the first card and on the second card (similar to flashcards). When you reveal two, either they will turn gray (meaning you guessed correctly) or nothing will happen (meaning that you guessed incorrectly).

Conclusion

Once again, if you have any suggestions at all, they would be greatly appreciated. If you want to learn more about this website, see the about page.
